Case Overview
When I joined the Beffo product team in 2021, I was the only designer in charge of conceptualizing, researching, and designing new features. This position required a considerable level of accountability on my part.
In this case study, we will be discussing a project completed by the design team at MTS Digital. Please note that in order to comply with our non-disclosure agreement, certain confidential information has been omitted. The views and information presented in this case study are solely those of the design team and may not necessarily reflect the views of MTS.
Challenges and problem statement
The Beffo app had already been launched and was being used by MTS employees, which provided us with data to analyze and research regarding user pain points and issues. This is what I alluded to:
Users experienced a lack of structure with regard to the various techniques available to them for assistance
Approximately 70% of users discontinued their daily usage of the app, citing its usefulness but difficulty in forming a habit
Users desired the ability to assess their mental state, with appropriate techniques recommended to them accordingly
Research
As the product designer at Beffo, it was crucial for me to ensure that the app's methods for maintaining good emotional health were grounded in validated, useful, and scientifically-proven techniques. I collaborated closely with the project curator, a certified psychotherapist, to ensure that each exercise, story, and meditation aligned with these standards.
Given this focus on evidence-based approaches, our team was faced with the challenge of selecting the most effective methodology to guide the development
As a product designer, my first step was to conduct extensive user research to identify any recurring patterns or pain points related to mental health maintenance among current Beffo users. Through user interviews, surveys, and data analysis, I gained insights into users' mental health concerns, their current coping strategies, and their expectations from a mental health app. This research provided me with a deeper understanding of user needs and helped me identify potential opportunities for new features that could enhance the user experience and support mental wellness.
A deliberate approach was taken to devise distinct user flows for three target user groups. By doing so, the application can be tailored to accommodate the individual usage patterns and lifestyle requirements of each user, while also being sensitive to their emotional state.
I utilized low-fidelity user flows to map out the experience for diverse user personas. Subsequently, I conducted thorough testing and collaborated with content specialists and licensed psychotherapists to validate the viability of our concepts.
Final Results
Upon receiving approval for the user flows, components, and screens, I proceeded to design interfaces for multiple features and tools that are aimed at enhancing users' mental well-being, inducing a state of calmness, and promoting healthy sleep patterns.
The user journey begins with a digital chatbot companion that assesses the user's condition and guides them through a comprehensive evaluation process, ultimately providing them with a tailored plan of action.
Upon completion of the evaluation process, the user is presented with a structured daily plan comprising various exercises such as breathing activities, informative articles, and journaling prompts aimed at educating and empowering the user.
Shoutout to the design team
In conclusion, I extend my sincere gratitude to every member of the Beffo product team whose dedicated efforts culminated in the release of our app during the unprecedented challenges posed by the Covid pandemic.
Beffo app played a vital role in supporting MTS employees to overcome daily challenges and maintain their mental well-being. Furthermore, our app became accessible to the wider public in March 2022, just as the people of Russia faced new challenges with the outbreak of war. I earnestly hope that our app served as a valuable resource in aiding individuals to cope with the stress and anxiety brought about by these trying circumstances.
